Earlier in the month, I attended the Norfolk farming conference. This was hosted by the RNAA at the updated conference centre on the Norfolk Showground.
The event was very well attended with around 400 delegates. I can’t say I came away feeling hugely enthusiastic about the future of farming, with returns per hectare for solar and the new proposed sustainable farming incentive rates for permanent wildflower mixes it makes me wonder where the future of food production is really going to fit in it all seems a little short sighted of the government. One particular farm I know has very recently started a solar project, the land is next to a electrical transformer bank, so power is easily transferred into the grid, but this is grade 1 silt being taken out of
production. Some of the very best land in the country that will be out of food production for at least 25 years.
Of course for the owner the numbers stack up, but it does not stop it being incredibly sad to see.
